Seven Mary Three was a college band that had the good fortune to get “Cumbersome,” a track from their self-produced CD CHURN, played on Orlando, Florida’s WJRR, the same radio station that “broke” Collective Soul, among others. AMERICAN STANDARD is a re-recording of the entire CHURN collection with two additional tracks, and it proves that Seven Mary Three is a band to watch.
Although they are often compared to the mighty Pearl Jam, the differences between the two are considerable. Seven Mary Three takes a rootsier approach to their music. The eleven tracks on AMERICAN STANDARD are evenly divided between straight “story songs” and those with image-laden poetry. Such musings are consistently supported by a musical bed of rhythmically flailing guitars and over-the-top drumming. Jason Ross’ rage-and-pain-filled vocals careen between growling and howling.
